Fwd: Richie's letter

Elder Connolly in Mexico Letter #51

Bash Onda Familia!

I've been here in Campeche for a little over 1 day and I'm obsessed!  It is such a cool city!  I absolutely love it. So much to tell, I just might have to explain it all with pictures~I have already taken a bunch!  But there is a 25mb limit per email and this dumb computer is the worst!

1.  Where exactly are you?
I'm in the city Campeche, state Campeche. South side!  Just google it ha!  the area
Samula is in my area and there is also a huge university in my area.

2.  Who is your new comp?  family:  how long out?  where from?
His name is Elder Meador~ he's from Missouri. Don't know much about his family, but his dad is a pilot and he wants to be a pilot. He is1 transfer less than I am. He's awesome! this transfer is going to rock!  I am super stoked! He's a stud.

3.  Did you get a new backpack?
Yeah, I did. I love it, thanks

4.  I am getting ready to send another package--do you need anything?
Peanut butter andddd... dang it i was wishing a had something but I can't think of it now. I'll make a list of stuff for next week. I forgot. I'm agenda-less right now so i forget.... ha

So its HILLY here! Merida is soooo flat, but here is just crazyyy hilly. I'll be walking on a street then all the sudden the street does a 50 degree upward incline! and when the rain comes(every day), it all funnells down in the street and makes a huge river!  I keep saying it would be a crazy city to longboard!  I wish I had one!

My house is up on a hill with an amazing view of the city and the ocean. I love it. We live above some members who are awesome. I haven't been out to the beach yet, we´ll have to go next week. It started to rain, and is currently raining right now.

I don't know if I told you but I have 2 wards to go to, one in the morning and 1 in the afternoon. Both are awesome, 1 is kinda small like Brisas was and the other is a little bit stronger with quiet a bit more people. Yesterday was a full day in the church from 830 to 3pm. We had invesitgatores that came to both. We also had some great lessons last night. I'm super stoked to work here.

Well I'm outtie, I'm kinda frustrated because this stinky computer keeps turning itself off and restarting... ahhh. Enjoy the pics. Love you all!  Elda C.

Elder Connolly MEXICO LETTER #49

Hey Fam

Well this week was great! we had a bunch of cool experiences that ill never forget!

First off, I am kinda dying a little bit because there transfers are DONE! but I just don't know where I'm going yet or who is my "hijo" or "son", or better said, who is going to be the next secreatry that takes my spot. The assistants and PResident are the only people that know and they wont tell me! but they did say its gonnna be sweeeeeet. I just wanna know!

Today, we went and played basketball with a bunch of guys. President was gonna come but didnt end up coming. And dad, i was with Ryan Erikson´s brother in law, Elder Calvert, when we played. I'll add a picture so you can show it to Ryan the next time you see him at Unita Golf. But then we went and washed our clothes early and now were just getting ready to run to centro, I am gonna buy some last second stuff before I get shipped off to my next area. Mom, I'm gonna buy a new backpack if that's chill, I've gone through 6 backpacks in my mission so far. TIP!!! to any future missionary, get a Northface or something legit that will last the 2 whole years! (and don't fall for the weak sauce ones from Mr. Mac) so lame!

This week, our numbers were pretty low, we had another busy week in the offices. but when we could, we went to work in our area, we had some amazing lessons. Cristina is still doing soooo great. her daughter is also so awesome, she reminds me of Hannah, Jayne or Maya ha, shes just as that age. We had an AWESOME family home evening with some a member family with Cristina last night, turned out so great. Also we had a cool experience yesterday, we found a new investigator potente! it was really cool how we found her too, i wrote about it in my journal. we have a cita with them today as well.

Sounds like there's a lot going on at home. Thanks for the Olympics updates......not! ok, all i want to know is if Michael Phelps is competeing and if hes swept the swimming again, and if the Bolt guy from Jamaca set a new world record. I'm sorry about Nancy mom, shes in a better place. Mom and dad went to Bennion Boys ranch! Mom, did you happen to take a picture of that picture of me and my buddies when we went? haha I don't remember them taking a picture of us, and I'D love a copy of it! that was sooo long ago! and I hope the st Jorge trip went well! catch ole general sherman for me dad!

Well I'm outtie~ that's about all the news I have got! I'll put some pics up, enjoy them. Have a good week. I might be emailing weekly Monday again, starting pasa manaña  ;)  love you all! Gracias por TODO!

Connolly, the Elder

Elder Connolly Mexicao letter #48

Yello Fam,

Gonna start with Q´s:

1.  Do you get the Dear Elders just as fast as doing the pouch?
yeah, its super fast, like less than a week, i recieve them here wednesday or thursday and they are sent monday. this is usually! one time i got one like 3 months late, but i think there was problem. only 1 time, just a fluck ha

2.  DID YOU GET OUR PACKAGE??????

Nope, i went yesterday. maybe it´ll be there next week!

3.  Did you find an apartment for the last 2 weeks?
Yep! its awesome. really small but semi new. its perfect. should be able to keep clean and stuff with the very minimal time we will be there in the day. we´re moving in on Monday. i went to the temple store this week and bought 13 huge pictures of Christ and the prophets and stuff and book of mormon stuff to put on the walls. it was only $12 each one, so i bought 1 of each ha. its like the 14 by 18 inch ones. i love them. it´ll be a cozy little home ;) ill send pics next week

4.  What are the total dates you served in the office?

i got here at the very begining of febuary. until now. so like almost 6 months, or just 4 transfers.

Well this week was just a super busy one. We found a house! which is great. elder Amador got sent off to another area, so now its just Elder Gibbs and I, just 2. Which is great and alot of fun. we went to the airport 3 different times this week: 2 times to drop off and 1 time to pick up a returning elder. that means, i woke up at 4am 2 of the days this week (including today... my P-day), which also means im tired ha. ahhhhh. but its chilllllll. well today i was in chucking mood. its something i need to develop more, my ability to avoid HORDING (spelling?) and just throw junk away! alot of these things might be cool to keep as a memory, but im kinda getting sick of them. so i chucked stuff ha. always feels good.

we had one of those lessons that just builds your testimony more than other and comfirm that you are doing your job as a missionary and you just being led to those chosen children of God that the Lord is preparing and has prepared. What a blessing. Its unreal to see conversions like this, ive only had a few in my mission. So i dont know if i told you about Isabel, an investigator we have. Yesterday was our last lesson with her. we didnt leave her, shes moving to Tabasco, the neighboring state. Its a blessing, she cant get baptized while living at her house with her parents, shes going there to study and living with her Aunt, her parents wont let her get baptized here. But she bore a testimony like she was already baptized. im bummed shes leaving, but i know she´ll be baptized over there. we´re gonna hand her off to the elders over there in a reference. I have her info and a young single adult from our ward is gonna keep in contact with her. I have also gained a huge testimony of members and the power that they have in the mission work. If you have missionaries in your ward or stake, do divisions with them! Help them out. its so rewarding. this recent convert sister of about 7 months has been coming to the lessons with us to Isabel and it was the combined effort of her testimony, the message that we had the opurtunity to share and the spirit that testified to her that this is all true. I can see isabel being a missionary someday. im so stoked! i love it.

Cristina is just a golden investigator, for real. there is no doubt about it. I dont know how i got so lucky to know these people. I dont think ill be here for her baptism and her 2 kids, but its okay. Gibbs will take some pics and send them onto me. thats good enough, and ill see her when i come back and visit in a few years. Aside from being a really busy week, we had some of the best times yet. For example, we have a rule that says we cant enter a house if there is not a person with the same gender as us and if so, they have to have 18 years old or more. With Cristina, its a problem, because shes a single mom. we set out chairs outside the front door and they sit inside and we teach through the front door, in rain or shine. On wednesday, she pulls out a lona ( i think its tarp in english translated but its like to cover a porch) and we spent 30 minutes putting it up, tying it to the roof and over the obscure arichture of her house to make it work so we wouldnt get wet in this season of many rains. just a privelige to work with prepared people like this. too sweeeeet

Well i cant think of anything else specifically, and we´re about to bounce, we are off to site see around Merida for the rest of the day with the Assistants. Im outtie, i love you all! enjoy the pics, laterrrr

elder C

PS: Cool fact, so we just found out something cool. the number #2 uni-cyclist in the country just got his mission call to Merida and will be coming here in September ha. Dope huh? i guess he had his article in the deseret news or something. maybe he´ll teach me a few tricks. dont think id be too rusty yet from my uni-cycling days ;) haha. laterrr

E. Connolly Mexico letter #47

yo Family!

Dad, did you catch General Sherman up fishin´?  And how did the girls trip finish up? haha i have to comment on the pic you sent me, the gum wall was just hilarious! who knows what goes down on the girls trip (beignet and babaganoush??), but im sure its just a blast ;) ! You´re all such great sisters and moms, I love you all!

Well so this week was great. I can finally say that im excited to leave the offices. Did i really say that? thought i never would. Im gonna love being a normal missionary again! we´ll see where i go! I thinkin this time ill be outside of Merida, but who knows! But what im not excited about is leaving my area, here in Aeropuerto. It always seems to happen to me ha, but right when i have to leave, the work starts the roll again. We had a miracle this week, we have this sister and 2 kids that we are teaching that is prepared more than ever! We are taking them to a baptism today at 5 so they can see how it is and get excited for theirs. The kids names are Fernando(13) and Natalie (9)! haha i love it when there are names from my family members! It makes it easier to remember them ;)  Go Nat! The sisters name is Cristina, and they are just awesome. Im excited to work with them.  Also we visited a reference that i got like 3 months ago again, but this time they were home, and now were teaching Isabel (19) and Mary (21). Also we have Juan and his wife, who dont really make the move to go to church, but are great. Jonni keeps going to church, we visited him this week, and we may have found his need. We´re planning our class tomorrow in the 2nd hour of church around Joni and Cristina. It´ll be great

The offices are going good, and we got some fun activities comin up, including our barbeque with Pres and his wife at their house and our "How to mark and study the scriptures class, Part II" with President Salinas comin up, before i bounce and leave the office. Im slowly getting things packed up and organized. Got all my pictures and videos saved to my hard drive and DVDs so ill leave the offices with empty everything so i can fill up the cards with Year 2 pics and memories. Some big things that are going on is that we are going to be moving out of the offices! For me, it wont effect anything, just the 2 weeks i have left here. The Area General Authorities sent out a letter to all the missions in Mexico and now missionaries cant live in the offices. Its crazy how much things have changed these past 8 months. So we´re out house searching while we work out in our area. If you happen to know anyone with a house rental, let me know ;)

So what else? Well i found out from experience that i am elergic to Moxasillin ? (spelling?) . It wasnt on my papers that i have allergies to anything, so i got sick, we went to the hospital, they gave me moxasillin and i broke out with crazy hives for 4 days! (but it did cure me ok) hahaha it was a memory. im better know, but it was a scratch-myself-silly few days. and you dont wanna know how difficult it is to sleep in a hammack with hives! DONT MOVE! haha

Well i hear Fictionist is comin out with something soon! And i also heard that the 60 minute foot rub went spectacular, can i order one of those for next P-day? And also that the Beach Boys still got their groove, even after 50 years! FUN, FUN, FUN! Happy birthday to Sarah Spencer, Big H Connolly (who i havent met yet) and Dave Connolly these past few weeks! Happy Birthday to America too, go 4th of July! yes, we did celebrate it here, we ordered our 6 Dollar Burgers from Carls Jr. with some waffle fries and a Coke...oh wait we cant drink Coke in the mission... well with juice ;) . I remember last year when we watched the fireworks out in the parking lot of the MTC from the Stadium of Fire 2011, and here comes the repeat of the holidays in year 2! American Pride! thanks for the e-card. and Todd i got your letter here already, your such a stud bro! i wanna hear about your jew-fro dunkin´ basketballs this next season aight? Ill hit you up with the pen and pad later. also to all, i would recommend using the PO box Pouch service to send letters, they get here by Fedex every week, and its alot quicker and cheaper! Its Mexico Merida Mission, POB 30150, SLC, UT 84130-0150 POUCH .

Well i love you all, im outtie. Thanks for all your prayers and support! Later,

elder connolly

Buenos Días Familia,

Learn Spanish if you wanna know what that says! (or just stick it in Google Translate). I had a great week this week. There was a lot of super cool experiences, both in the office and in the area. We had some of the coolest lessons I've had in my mission. But as always, in this work of ups and downs, there was a few bummers this week. We are leaving Jonni for a bit, he just is not progressing, even though he comes to church every week and welcomes us into his home every time we come. In our weekly planning on Sunday and from our District Reunion, we planned to focus on the Priesthood and hoped that it would call his attention a little bit more, because we´d tried the "families can be together forever" pitch and it just wasn't sticking, I have no idea why... We had a awesome lesson with him Tuesday about how the priesthood would bless his life and family and house, he said he wanted to become worthy enough to have it, and we just testified to him of the power of God that he gives to men. Then to close, we gave him a preisthood blessing and left. Then we watched the Restoration  video with him on Thursday and had a great lesson, but when we talk to him about baptism and stuff, he just says he doesn't see the need....HOWWW!? it's suppper frustrating~probably the most frustrating thing is trying to comprehend how people don't see the truth of what we teach, and we explain it and they don't get it!  Basically, it all comes down to timing~ it's just not his time. so we have to leave him. Also, we got Hernan to accept a baptismal date, he has been reading and doing the studies on the back of the pamphlets that we have given him, and he just realized the need to be baptized. Juan is doing good, it will take a little bit of time to come around, but he´ll come sooner or later.

Tomorrow in Mexico is voting day for presidente of mexico and governer and stuff, only every 6 years in Mexico!  There have been a bunch of rallies and parades these past few weeks, and tomorrow is the day.

We´ll see who comes to church tomorrow, even members. Its a bummer that they do it on Sunday here, we are only going to have sacrament meeting. And its kinda hard to vote here, well not hard, just a lot more complicated that in the states.  They don't use a computer box, but do it by hand, and you have to go back to the city where you were born. And in Merida, practically everyone was born in pueblitos outside of merida, because i'ts just recently that everyone is moving into the city. Merida has grown like 4 times its size in 20 years. My area where we knock the work didn't exist 15 years ago! haha. So anyways, and I think Elder Amador is gonna go vote for the presidential election tomorrow.

So today was a chill day, this week we had maintainence come and clean the whole back yard of the office! and we also got a cleaning lady in the offices!!!! hahaha, I love it! not gonna lie, its hard to keep this place clean all the time, just us 3 secretaries. we have constant traffic of missionaries and also our own missionary schedule. We usually spend a few hours cleaning on Saturdays, sweeping and mopping up and downstairs, but now we just have to clean our apartment, a LOT smaller and do-able. I actually took a 2.5 hour nap this morning, was very well needed. I am ready to go for this week!

Well I wanted to share what we learned in the junta with President this week. So as normal, we have our weekly meeting with Pres, the other secretaries and the Assistants, and it usually takes about an hour and a half to 2 hours, just planning for what we are gonna do this week or upcoming weeks, updates on what we did the week before, what we need to get ready for, and all that jazz. Well this week we finished really fast~~ maybe in like 30 minutes. We all finished our reports, and with no other asuntos, President just started to teach us. and it went for about 2 hours ha. He started with what he learned in the morning in his study, about miracles and how they can happen. We talked about, using scripture, what is required and how they come to pass. and in talking about this, he brought up 3 Nephi 8:1, which teaches that you have to be cleansed of "every whit" from your iniquity to be worthy enough to do a miracle in the name of Christ. He started to humble himself before us, and in about 30 minutes of that, we all felt like crap haha. THen he said, "i can see it in your faces, it looks like a knife just got put into your heart and is twisting. but I want you to think for a minute. The state that you guys are in right now, this is called a contrite spirit. And isn't that what Christ requires of us?" Read 2 Nephi 2:6-8, and also 3 Nephi 9:20. Then he said "Well, how are we gonna find motivation? If we realize constantly just how sinful we are, how small we are, how fast we fall into temptation, we just are never happy. How are we gonna find the animo again?" Then he said, "Ill tell you how i find animo. I find animo in the ressurection , in the thought of the reality of the plan of God, that I will see my wife and kids, in celestial bodies and in there perfect form, again, the promise of the eternal family." he went on for like 15 minutes. It was so powerful!!

I think my real testimony of this started about 5 months ago. I remember vividily when we were in a capacitation with president, one I will never forget. To close, President started to bear his testimony, but he started with the plan of salvation, something we didn't really talk about that day, which was interesting. But I'll never forget the words he said, and I can't translate it into English. But I felt the power of the Holy Ghost testify to me that we were once with God, in His presence, before we came to earth, that we did indeed hear His voice, and OH did we REJOICE when He told us all, in his voice of thunder that would shake mother earth silly, as we listened to Him proclaim His plan, that a Savior of the world would be prepared and that we would come to earth and follow by faith in obedience to His commandments to be able to return to His presence and be like Him. It is one thing to believe that, and another thing to really think in how that was and how the plan WILL be. All my life i believed it, because I was taught since primary this plan, but to think of it realistically has changed my whole perspective of it all. I think that gives me the animo I need. iIrely on the promises I have from God to keep my eye set on the real goals in life. One of my favorite scriptures right now is Moroni 7:41. I have faith in this plan.

Well im outtie, have a great week. Girls, enjoy the girls trip. Dad enjoy the fishing and golfing and breathin´ in the home Idaho air in the home state ;) love you all, thanks for todo!

Elder Connolly in Mexico Letter #45

Hola Familia!

Happy Fathers day to every father out there! I don't know how far this email makes it but best withes from Elder Connolly in Mexico! Thanks for the various reminders Mamá Joan;)

So what else is new? Hey cool story about the basketball star that is LDS, I hope he goes to BYU haha. and when will Todd make the front cover of the Sports Illustrated? I think the Afro alone would sell it! haha. Thanks for forwarding that. So it was a busy week, it was transfers week and there were various changes in the offices, the couple did arrive, it has been interesting to situate everything now, we´re no longer just 20 year old boys running it, there are 60 year olds with us, apart from being 60, we now have a women in our presence always, something to get used to ;)....again. haha. Just small things like always having toilet paper in the bathrooms has been a challenge, but we´re workin'  through the kinks ;) haha.

I do love having our married couple around. Elder Vazquez is such a great guy. They are converts of about (I'm guessing) 30 years, and have already been mission presidents in Argentina. They have also been counselors to mission presidents various times in Mexico City and this time they are just plain "Elder" and "Hermana" Vazquez, normal missionaries. They have alot of experience and are so friendly. Elder Vazquez always makes the joke  about how tall I am and when we take pictures together he comments that we have to find a bucket to put on the ground or he can stand on the stairs or a ledge so he can stand on it so he doesn't look so short standing next to me haha. I'm really excited for this transfer specifically for the chance to get to know them better. They are verrrry slow in the office however haha, they´re training is coming along but it will take them awhile to get up the speed that the younger elders can do them at, because most of the things we do are on the computer. Elder Suarez is still here teaching the Sister how to register the baptisms and stuff like that~ he should have already been in his new area since Monday! He is going to Cancun and his companion is working with a priest from his new ward until he gets there! I have now moved all my stuff to the offices, which is nice!  I can now enjoy living in 1 house, literally a blessing! Elder Saurez and I were the only 2 elders in the mission that had that! We had to rearrange the desks and computers a bit, Elder Gibbs brought all his stuff into my room and and we put the other desk in with the Secretary of Finances, which will be Elder Vazquez, so that they can be together and we can be together. By the way, Elder Gibbs in my new companion, but we are going to have a 3 some with Elder Amador, that will be with us this whole transfer because he has to train Elder Vazquez how to be the finaciero. Oh and also, President has assigned us only to Aeropuerto, so we won't have the other wards like I thought, which is good. And since Elder Suarez has been here with us, we have had 4 missionaries working in Aeropuerto, so we have been able to visit alot more people lately.

The work this week: first off it was a cool meeting Sunday, because it was Stake conference and a Seventy came and talked. Also President Salinas also talked. It was soooo awesome. We had several investigators in the church too, which was great. Jonni went with his wife alone to the Saturday night session, he's getting closer and closer! Also Irma is doing good. and Herman Canul, who got baptized a month ago, got the preisthood on Sunday, I think by the Seventy. it was wayy cool! and Jose Romero is getting the Melchezedik Preisthood these coming weeks. It's sooo cool! I freaking love these guys that are stepping up! It's so great to see the change. Its toooo sweeeeet.

Ok the Questions:

1.  Did you ever g out to eat with the office?
YEP! I'm sending the pic
2.  Did anyone ever get to cook cupcakes for your b-day?
YEP! I'm sending the pic
3.  Did you get Paige's package?

YEP!  I don't have a picture though ;)

WEll I'm headin out! Laterrrr

Yo Family!  It is TRANSFER WEEK NEXT WEEK! So I dont know if you guys remember me mentioning like 3 months ago that there is a married couple here on a mission, a guy and his wife, and I mentioned that they were going to come to work in the offices?  Well if i didnt, that's what is it. and Monday, they come!  So this is what is means for me: I am staying still as secretary, but my comp, Elder Suarez is going to leave, and I am going to be comps with Elder Gibbs, and Elder Amador, too, because he has to train the Guy how to be fianciaero for 1 transfer. So we are going to have a 3some for this transfer and we have 4 wards to attend to: Aeropuerto (where I am now), Centro, Garcia Gengeres, and a small city outside of Merida!) we are going to be running around everywhere this transfer! and I am going to now live 100% in the offices. we are going to close my trazan-ed walled home and I'll be moving here! haha im kinda excited-- my biggest complaint about being in the offices is that I have been living in 2 houses!  It's been super hard, from having clean laundry in both places, buying food for both houses, and just living so far away from the offices. so that will be a big change. I'll send a picture of my 2 new comps next week! This week, it went well. Today I have been super busy because we have to get everything ready here in the offices for the arriveal of the couple. I'm super sorry, I've got to go. I told you the biggest change of this week. We´re headed out to eat. Thanks for the emails I got this week!  You guys rock. love you all! Laterrrrr

Ill look into it. the other secretary wants to do it too. if i have Q´s or if you can do anything to help me mom, ill let you know. i would like to vote just to say i did! ha

2.  Story of the week?
UMMM i would have to say with Jonni. Hes a hopeful temple trip in a year ha, so we are trying to work alot with him. His wife is a strong member and comes from a strong family. her dad is one of the 7 stake presidentes in Merida or something. but she married a catholic! haha come on! we had a great few lessons this week. Two weeks ago he felt pressured when we put a baptismal date for the 14th of June and actaully told his wife that he didnt want us to return. She was devisated and started to pray to have his heart softened toward the message. And when we showed up for the lesson on THursday, he was ready to learn again and thats when his wife told us the story of what had happened over the past 2 weeks, with tears streaming down her cheeks. Jonni´s a great guy, would make a great member and baptism, but he just needs a little bit of time. i hope ill be here for when he feels ready. what helped a ton was that we had the 2nd councelor in the ward come with us to the lesson on thursday, and he just gave a great testimony of how he converted to the church, and to our surprsie, it was a very similar story with how Jonni is comin to the church, almost a perfect match. and that helped Jonni out alot. they are coming to church tomorrow, and we hope to keep him there for at least the 2nd hour, and would be amazing for the 3rd too!

3.  We loved the story of Hernan--we are dying to hear if anything happened this week....
so hes listening to us. nothing really specacular came from him this week, but im grateful for the chance we have again to teach him again.

4.  What are the plans the church has for August as far as Mitt Romney?  I am so curious!

So come august, Mormon.org is coming out in spanish, ALOT better than it is. Presidente Salinas is beyond extadic about this release. As missionaries, we are told to start preparing and writing a profile about who we are, as Mormons, without the plaque, just plain old Richie Connolly. We are going to take a picture in street clothes and put our real names and they´re all going to go up online. when mines up, ill tell you! but you may have to learn spanish to read it! Also, as part of the lessons, we are going to have time set apart in planing to use mormon.org Every week to use the videos that will be releasing for the missionaries. for example, if we are teaching someone about faith one day, we leave Alma 32 in teh book of mormon and the video "etc" on mormon.org. the missionary work is going to the internet, and what presidente Salinas told us: "you will be able to tell your kids and write in your journals that you were in the mission when the work went digital." It should be specacular, and im excited to try it out when it relesaes. Especially in parts where there is a lot of touristsm, there are alot of people who know "the mormons" because of Mitt Romney, and the church is well aware of that adn taking advantage of it. So with the new mormon.org that will release in spanish in august, we will use the Mormon Boom to our advantage. If i think of more news, ill let you know next week!

Well the week went well, the work is good. the office was chill this week, the sun is unbelieveable hot, and i got a haircut ;) ! thats about it, and its time i gotta go. sorry its somewhat short. Thanks for the emails and letters. you guys are the beeeest! Laterrrr

Yo fam,

So today was pretty shot as far as relaxing, what i look for in a P day ha, but it started out bright and early about 530, we went to the park and played baseball and ultimate frizbe with the assistants. We dont know who, but president has told us that next week someones leaving, it could be me, who knows!? so today was our last chance to get together, yo, amador, suarez, gibbs, briones and zeitner. Its been alot of fun with these guys. but we finished up at around 730 then we had to go to an activity all day in my old stake center in brisas for the young single adults, people preparing to go on a mission and others, from all over the penisula, from cancun to campeche. Presidente Salinas talked to them, and we did some pracitces of how to invite people to baptism and contacting people in the calle. it was really cool, there was about 100 people there. then we did divisions, i went with this kid from Campeche named Nefi, hes 18 preparing to serve a mission. we each were given a book of mormon, we wrote our testimonies in the back then went out and gave them out. in about 30 minutes, we gave out the 2 book of mormons, 1 lesson and 4 references! its so lucky for the missionaries whos area is around the stake center cause they just got like 150 references..... that is a DREAM as a missionary. i want to talk the people into doing the same activity in Aeropuerto, my ward on the other side of the city! COME ON! haha but it was a cool experience. i know this work is true and im grateful for the chance to be apart of it. ive learned so much and still have ALOT to learn and get better at, pero hay voy!

we gotta head out to eat y chambiar in the area, im outtie. sorry its short, talk to you later! thanks for the Birthday emails everyone that sent them! you rock!

Laterrrrr

Yo Fam!

Hi. Hows everybody doin? so first things first, tomorrow, i talk to you guys! i still dont know what time ha, i think around 7. but mom ill let you know later on. the Mexicans all got their chance to talk on thursday, in mexico, mothers day is always may 10th, no matter what. but every other country (i think) its the 2nd sunday of May. So we have 3 people that are going to talk here from the offices, we{re still trying to figure out what time to do it. but anyways, that´ll be fun!

so the work, we had a baptism yesterday! the Hermano Herman Canul FINALLY got baptized! there wasnt as many people there at this one, he didnt want us to invite anyone, but some of the members came and it turned out good. the elder that found him about 8 months ago, who was in a nieghboring area, came and baptized him. he was really happy. Now with the parents baptized, we hope to get the kids baptized soon!

Irma has droped off the map...she has turned into an eternal investigator...the WORST! im making it sound bad, shes still potente, but she just doesn´t have any hurry to get baptized. she said the other appointment, "well there will always be more elders, ill just get baptized with them".... :´(  its ok. there is good news, we got a call yesterday after the baptizm from Irma´s daughter, Nacnicte, the ex misionera, and she told us that her sister wants us to visit her! YEAH! and her sisters son, Issac has been going to church with Irma for the past 2 months. Hope all goes well, we have an appointment with them at 7 tonight.

also, if i didnt mention Virginia and Maybeth, a mom and daughter that we contacted 2 weeks ago, are still doin good! they are gonna come to church with us this week. we had a great lesson with them yesterday, they are just awesome. also i think i mentioned to you guys about Luis, we stoped by his house yesterday, we asked him if he has been reading in the book of mormon, and he said he prayed and has a testimony! ha it was kinda a shocker, i loved it. i just hope his parents will let him go. we´re gonna stop by his house tomorrow morning to take him to church, cross yo fingers.

We found out this week that Jennifers dad wont let her get baptized :( it stinks. she was sad ha. hopefully soon something will change. and we also found a family that lives next door to jennifer, the moms name is wendy, and she seems like she could be potente. more on her next week.

so this week, we had a capacitation from president, and as always, was freaking awesome. i love to hear him talk. i can say that President Salinas is very striaght forward. and he knows the scriptures probably better than anyone ive met. we had a class for a district meeting where he came and he told us how he studies the scriptures. he pulled out his laptop and in a microsoft excel file, he had hundreds of scriptures wiht about 600+ subjects, and what he does is when he reads a scripture that he likes, he adds the subject (if it doesnt already exist), for example "Faith", then puts his favorite scriptures about Faith to the right, and over the years since his mission, he has compiled this excel file, or in other words, his own Topical Guide, so when he has to give a talk about a certain topic, he uses what he has found personally, and of course, its organized from first to last in the order that he likes. its so awesome, i wanna do that post mish

Elder Connolly Mexico Letter #38

Yo Fam,

WHATZ GOOD?

I´ll start out with the the Qs.

Q's

1.  Did you get any packages?  the one dollar bills--did they make it?  You will have your b-day soon......I hope you get our packages......
nope, not yet~ yep! I'm excited!

2. Don't forget the elders newsletter......
ok, did it already

3.  I love you!

That's not a question, but I'll take it ;)

Well now that tha'ts over,I'll tell you about my week. It was good. Yes, it was transfers, and since it is also the first week of the month, there was the monthly Zone Leader council, of which I prepare all the materials for each zone.  I get their orders (what do they need: pamphlets, records, papers, materials), organize them into boxes for each of the 10 zones, then drop them off at conference.  But this week, the  Book of   Mormons arrived TODAY!....the conference was yesterday...so now I have to send them other ways. I'll figure it out somehow...also I have 4 cell phones that don't work that I am trying to get working, and 2 other companionships lost their phone in the last 2 days.  But it's chill.

Side note : my comp has discovered the song, "I know who I am, I'll take a stand, for all I believe, I hope this feeling won't go away,  if I let it stay, I'm taking it home with me" and since then it's all he listens too hahaha. just jammin' out to it right now with a printed out lyrics sheet ha.

The works going great. The most potentes investigators we have right now are Herman and Irma. Herman is going to be baptized this next week! keep your fingers crossed! We have Jennifer that could be baptized anytime but we are waiting to talk to her parents before we set anything. We have Suri and her triplets that are 11 years old, Aaron, Jessica, and Melissa and 1 other daughter Roxanna that is 15. They have become way potentes, the kids are reading the Book of Mormon! Also Suri´s mom is named Irma also, and she is listening to us! They haven't gone to church yet at all, and the 3 triplets have their primer comunion (first comunion?? en english??) the thing for Catholic kids when they are about 11 or 12 or so, well theirs is in June.  We´ll see what we can do to help them get to church sometime soon, hopefully tomorrow!!!!! We have Jonny, but he has failed us a bit this week.  More good news on him next week hopefully. Mirsa is still listening to us, hopefully she makes it to church tomorrow!

LAUNDRY BREAK....

ok, just got back from laundry, I made a voice recording.  So enjoy it! I'm bouncin!

Later

Elder Connolly Mexico Letter #37

Yo FAm,

bash onda? hows e´r bodi doin´?¿ Im great, thanks for your letters mis padres, they´re great. ill start out with the Q´s:

QUESTIONS:

1.  I am very confused.  Did you ever get my Easter packsage--it had Easter candy and stuff in it--I think you could tell......It sounded like you GOT THE BIRTHDAY PRESENT..DID YOU GET ONE WITH WRAPPED GIFTS AND AND WRAPPED BOOK?  It also had a slicone cupcake pan so you can make the cake mixes and frost them.  Enjoy!!!!!

wow, sounds good, the thing is we dont have an oven to cook cupcakes ha, i can give it to the Presidents wife to make them. yeah i got that easter one, the freaking cadbury egges are the BOMB. no i didnt get the wrapped book one yet. ill save the book. also mom, something funny, so the Hermana Salinas, the presidents wife, was in the offices monday, and ive had that nativity set you send me from christmas in my desk, i decided to give it to her (sorry if you wanted me to keep it) but she absolutely loved it. she collects them like you do, and you sent me some pics around christmas that were of the hutch with all your nativities, so i showed them to her, she loved them! then she discovered the family calendars, looked through both of them, loved them! couldnt believe i had 12 siblings, then, as everyone does, saw the pictures of Robbie, and said " is he your brother? is he active in the church? " hahahahah. then i say hes a rockkkkero y tiene su banda. she took the christmas CD of Cait and Rob, then president gave it back to me a few days later and said they listened to it all day the past few days ha! anyways, ill let you know when the others arrive.

2.  Your companion looks so cute in the pics--tell us a little more about him.

Elder Suarezzz, hes awesome. welllll, hes from Peru, one of the 14 or so foreigners here in the mission, other than the Gringos de USA. Hes older than me, but i have more time in the mission than him. it took him 6 months to get his call then another 4 months to leave. he teachs me stuff/words from his country. Hes the oldest in his family of 2 kids, his mom has always been a member, and his dad got baptized like 5 years ago, but right now he is inactive, he hopes to get them sealed when he gets back. he has a little sister thats gonna go on a mission within a few years. hes changed alot with me, we get along really well. ummmmm, lets see...any specific questions you wanna ask?? and one things for sure, ill be visiting him in Peru post mish haha ;)

3.  Mothers day phone call....CAN WE SCYPE?  how fun would that be?  If you have a computer in the office we thought maybe the pres would let you...?

I know, crazy huh, 2 weeks? ill be calling from the offices. maybe if i break the rules, we can skype... ha definately possible. i dont think so. but we´ll see. we have web cams. but its for sure 13th of may

so the work, things are goin´ good. we found a bunch of new investigators this week, we started to contact a lot more than we used to, and its paying off. we have some appointments all set up and stuff, im excited for this next week. we are teaching Irma still, shes doing really good, has a testimony of the church but is waiting a little bit to baptize...we were gonna have it today but she backed out thursday. so hopefully soon. also we have jennifer, another 9 year old girl that is just soooo excited and enthusiastic about the church. her parents arnt memebers, but goes to church with the grandparents, who are awesome, recent converts of about 3 years and are preparing to enter in the temple within the next 6 months. we hope to be able to baptize jennifer and if we can, come back and enter the temple with her and the grandparents when they go through to get sealed, but we dont know if we will be able too. IM WILLING TO DO ANYTHING TO GET TO THE TEMPLE! and the only ticket is converts that go through to get sealed or take out endowments. Elder Dominguez and I are still planing on Raul and Pili, our convert in Brisas. THey are doing so great, we´ve been writing them letters of encouragement and im praying ill get to go in 9.5 months! also mirsa dominguez is still listening to us, the miracle family we found and brought to general conference. also we got mirna and her daughter helni, those are are potentes right now. and we hope to get some more out of our contacts. more next week.

So 6 iphones arrived at the offices today with our names of them, one for every secreatry and the APs!! i couldnt believe it, president Salinas mentioned it to us that we were going to get them like 5 weeks ago in our weekly meeting, but they arrived today in the mail. I already set mine up, the the thing is there is no number yet cause they didnt buy the special micro sim card, but it should be up by next week. We´re stoked! Maybe we´ll be able to do skype for the mothers day call from my phone! haha

also, so in the past 3 weeks, like 5 elders have gone home early! its such a bummer. so it was my turn to go to the airport to drop them off earlyyyyy in the mornin´ on tuesday, which was takin me back to the first day when i arrived here over 8 months ago. the funniest part was half the TVs had a countdown timer until 21 of December 2012, the END of the world at noon day haha. its just funny. i cant wait for that day, its gonna be just CHOAS. ive met true believers of this. unless God is planning some big joke when he really choses to end the world that day, its just gonna be a baptizing fest the 22nd of December and for the next couple weeks after that haha! its gonna be NUTTY! im stoked ;)  also i saw all the advertisements for all the Resort Golf courses down here dad, you´ll have to come back and play them with me ;)

other POI´s (points of interest)
  • its transfers next week
  • i have to open 3 areas
  • close 3 other areas
  • 10 missionaries are gonna arrive
  • basically, im gonna have a good ole busy next week! but im excited!
With all my love, im outtie!

MEXICO CARTAA #36

Yo FAm,

Bash Onda? i just got back from my first morning run in about 3 months! i feels soo good to run, but holy smokes--I am way out of shape!! No way, I  couldn't wait to check my email to see results about how Danny and Lisa did in the marathon, so I opened my inbox, NADA ESTABA! Nothing!  I was joking about checking the results myself on Tuesday, tha;ts breaking the rules haha. but it forced me to do it this morning...thanks fam... go Dan! 3:14! I couldn't find Lisa, let me know!

So I think the first thing to talk about would be the visit from Elder Andersen. It was awesome!  To start, we all loaded up on the buses Monday afternoon and took the 4.5 hours bus ride to Cancun for the night. We got there at the stake center around 8, got everyone settled (a VERY big task, holy cow, there are soooooo many of us in the mission field-- utter choas. I made a lot of new friends ha, it was so awesome, and I finally put a face to all the names I memorize from sorting their mail and ordering their stuff and calling/talking to them por the phone). All 178 (exactly 178.... it took us about 25 minutes to count up everyone on the tablero in the oficina, with presidente, his wife, the 4 secretaries and the aps haha) of us were assigned to houses of the missionaries that were there in Cancun, putting the sister missionaries in closer houses and random assignments to the rest, my comp and I got put in the house in Barrio Maya with 8 other people, in a house that houses 2... haha. It was an interesting night-- but fun. We went to bed around 11:30, and I got up at 4:30 to shower before everyone else, got ready, then the host missionaries told us that I shouldn't have showered in the bathroom with the facet because the water is contamated because animals got into the water tank above the house and died... haha.  Anyways... we show up at the stake center at 5:50 for my choir practice at 6!  I forgot to tell you guys that ha, I realize how much I forget to mention every week, I forget ha.  I'm sorry.  There was a 9 member choir that the aps picked to sing for Elder Andersen,  and we sang "Have I done any good in the World Today?" in Spanish that we´d practiced every Sunday night for the past few weeks.
It was potente!  Then around 7:15, we started to file everyone in and by 8, everyone was in their seat inside the chapel, it was quite the task.  We took a pamoramic picture and waited 1 hour for Elder Andersen to come at 9. He showed up with a quoerm of the seventy de Mexico, Elder de Moyas.  We sang the musical number, they president and his wife bore their testimonies, the wives of the general authories spoke, de Moyas talked, then the rest of the time was Elder Andersen. It was true, he speaks Italian, Spanish, served his mission and was mish pres in France, and lived in brazil as well so knows portuguese, and knows english obviously. he talked to us in spanish, it was cool.  It costed him a little bit, but it all came out good. he talked of Christ, his grace, mercy and merits, what they are and the difference between them. Also there was one time toward the end, he was talking in Spanish, he had a portable mic on him and we was walking around picking out people to answer Qs in the aisles around the whole chapel, then he just turns around, " alright I have something to say in English", the spanish was definately holding him back from what the spirit was telling him to say ha. he went back up to the stand again and there was some guy there to translate, and he just started the coolest talk about repentance and forgivness. He would say somehting, then the translator would say it in spanish. he was like yelling this, with hand motions and all.  He would say something then wait, the translator would say it and if it was said wrong, he would yell at the translator to say it right, exactly how he said it haha. It was so powerful. It was so tight. I think my favorite part of any apostle talking is when they tesitfy.  I always look forward to hearing " I bear my apostolic witness that Jesus is the Christ. I am one of His special witnesses." there's no way you can't believe them! ha.
So I was sitting right in front of him on the 2nd row with my portable mic to hand out to the poeple that were gonna talk in my corner of the chapel, and we would make eye contact a ton ha, then he would just smile haha, like 20 times ha. It was funny. when he left, it was choas again. I had to hand out the packages and mail for all the missionaries that I thought would be the best, most prepared way to do it, but it didnt work...so it was pretty much running around with trying to hand out stuff.  It was bad. Everyone wanted to take pictures with their buddies, past comps, their generation, etc. Finally we got it all handled, I met up wiht my generation which was way fun, we took some pics and just talked for a bit. It was so fun, I love my buddies here in the mish. then the pizzas arrived, around 80 pizzas! and Little Ceasers Pizza! I didn't know that place existed in Mexico. Wel,l once we finished eating, we loaded up the bus again and off we went. It was a sleepless busride with lots of talking and stuff with new buddies-- just a blast.

Well that was a definite highlight of the week. Also cant forget my baptism last week of Abinadí!  He is such a stud!  Definately gonna keep contact with him post mish.  He is like my best friend. Everything went well, his uncle baptized and confirmed him, which was cool for them.  He's still going strong, we have visited him a few times this week, and what I love is that every time we finish, he now insists that we do the closing prayer on our knees every time, something that we teach and do when the situation is approprate. It is awesome to see the changes in people, ha!

So this was a great week!  But holy smokes, so much happens in the mish.  Being somewhat behind the scenes here in the offices, you see really how crazy and  bumpy road is, the good~ but mostly the BAD of the missionaries, and how everything comes together. I'ts interesting. the mission isn't a ride on the ferry for 2 years ha. It's NUTTY!

LATERRR in the day. got the Q email:

1.  Did you get the Easter package?
Yeah, and its funny you said that mom. I didn't see what day you sent it, but i think the package i got on Monday was one you sent like 4 days before.  It was the one with girl scout cookies. 'It was cool, I wasn't expecting to get it. I sign for all the packages 1 at a time at the post office when I pick them up, and it said CONNOLLY ha, alright ha!  So I think tha'ts the one, unless you sent another?  Also last week I got the package for dearelders and they were letters from february, like 2 months old! then this week i got dearelders that were written 5 days ago! its weird. way random.

2.  Do packages ever seem tampered with or opened?
oh yeah ha, always. its basically all taped up, you cant see the cardboard sometimes. they open them. and sometimes not treated well. the one with chocolate 3 weeks ago was completely soaked then dried up bcuase of the rain. but its chillll

3.  what about the Spencer Kimball story?
oh yeah, about the mountains of difficulty. BRING THEM ON! its probably going in my homecoming talk--no I'm not thinking about that yet at all, but its homecoming talk material ha, turning points in the mish. so look forward to it, it was definately the biggest turning point in my mish

GO LISA! 3:29!! so awesome. REPEAT in 2 years, with me! well I definately have tons of fotos i want to send but the dumb 25 MB limit is withholding me ha. so I will send what I can.  Whatev doesn't make it, you´ll see in 2 years. in the mean time, just wish you could be where I am, cause its too cool ;) love you all! laterrrr

Elder Connolly in Mexico Letter #34

Hola Fam!

HAPPY EASTER!

Q{s
1. requests for birthday gifts?
I cant think of anything right now. I am enjoying my package of reese's pieces and cadbury eggs and my new pj's, suppper light!  Thank you!  I already have my presents for my birthday with me in my luggage that I am waiting to open: new underwear...and new socks...and new white shirts ha!  YAHHOOO.... SWEEEEET!!!!  I am sooo excited! (for real).  Also, I'm gonna buy more pants mom-- I only have 2 right now
(**I just went and asked my fellow secretaries here in the offices what I should ask for, they all said money on the card for LOS TROMPOS, a restaurant here that we go to often, wayyyyyyyy goooooood.  Tha'ts all i can think up right now) OH wait,  I do have a request, mom I'll send you a separate email.

And about the package real quick, that talk by the Carlsons. wow!  It made me cry~ ha!  i hadn't cried since my 1st transfer and I  couldn't believe it.  I read it again and cried again.  Then it was weird, I kinda felt like crying again, so i read it again, and cried again~~ hahaha!  It makes me so happy, go Carlsons!  I didn't know any of that story, only the end from that glorious letter from Elder Carlson in December. So sweet.  SIGAN ADALANTE!

2.  Send something for East High Elders--fav part of conference....
ohhh yeah, I'll do it.

WEll fam, how have you all been?  Where to start.... well, Mom, I'll start with a funny story. Sooooo remember that miltary sealed salmon you sent me back in like September??   Well, I've had it all this time haha, and about 2 weeks ago, I had an idea.  After the weekly meeting with Pres and his wife, I went and grabbed it, and presented it to Hermana Salinas, wife of pres,so that she could cook it and we could have a office dinner or something.  It was going to be the only way I would get myself to cook it haha.  Well, the next week, the announcement came out that we would have the lunch this last Thursday!  So, we had a lunch with the secretaries and the assistants and the Pres and his family at their house. WOW it was soooo good~ the only thing, we didn't eat the salmon! haha.  It's what started it all, but we didn't eat it!  We had steak, german sausage and chicken, with cheesey tortillas.  It was amazing. but the Hermana Salinas said that we would still eat the salmon, there was just not enough for everyone for the big lunch, so she is going to make tortas one morning and take them over to the offices for a brunch ha, I'm down :)

So on Monday, there was a big storm here~ it was pretty cool.   We were on our way to the district meeting from our area and we got of the bus when it started to rain so hard and we we ran into a bakery about half a block from where we got off the bus for shelter and there we stayed for about 40 minutes waiting out the storm, eating some rice pudding and creme brule with the 2 panaderas, 2 lady bakers, with no electricity hahaha.  It was a memory.  Then we just went back to the offices to change anddry off and clean up what the storm left.  We didn't have electricity that night and our internet box blew up so we couldn't really work here for a few days, and we also spent 1 morning just cleaning up outside because it left a mess.  But we{re all back in order now.

The work, we had a so so week.  As far as conference was, we had alot of investigators go, I think 8.  We did end up taking the family Dominguez, that lady I talked about last week, just Mirsa, the mom and her 2 kids, but it was awesome. they loved it.  They{ll be coming to church again this week~ the only thing is it was hard to find them this week to teach them.  Everytime we passed by she was cutting hair ha!, so we passed the next day, same story.  But we did find a space for 1 lesson.  This fam is awesome, I actually am anxious to meet the husband~ he's chill but she told us that he is slightly atheist, which in my opinion is better than hard catholic ha. We'll see.  The goal is the familia compeleta!  Also we have another investigator named Abinadi, his cousins and extended family are members, but his family isn't.  His mom just loved the Book of Mormon name Abinadi, so she named him that, but wasn't a member.  Actually she has passed away about 5 years ago, so that's been a focal point with Abinadi, that he can see her again. He is 21 years old, a big kid that looks intimidating, but hes like a big teddy bear ha!  He's a stud.  Also we have Irma and Isacc, her grandson.  Irma´s daughter just got back from a mission. She was baptized 3 years ago, only person in her family to get baptized, and served a mission.  So we've been working with her family.  She loved conference, went Saturday and wanted to go back for Sunday. we'll see what happens this week. a Also we had a new guy, Johnny~ his wife is member, but he isn't.  He's bien potente, we hope to see him get baptized soon, then 1 year get sealed in the temple!   They have a new baby about 4 months old, that is really cute but we know that it has problems, of what I am not sure, but problems physically. I think its what softened the heart of the husband to listen.  Also we have a 17 year old kid named Marco, that we kinda forgot about until yesterday for a few weeks, had lesson with him and he's awesome, so hes a prospect too ha. and also great news, we had an unexpected surprise, remember the family Canul?  Well, they went to conference and we had a powerful lesson with the husband, German, and he finally feels ready to get baptized, finallllllly!  More info next week.....

Conference finished up great, there were so many great talks. we enjoyed it here. Spanish for preisthood session and Sunday at the stake center and English the first 2 sessions. really quick, I forgot!  We showed up for priesthood session at 6pm on Satuday night, to find our convert Jose Romero, already there.  We go up and sit by him, come to find out he has been there since 10 in the morning for the first 2 sessions, showed up all by himself, took his own food for the whole day for lunch and dinner, until the end of the Preisthood session at 8!  Haha he is a wonder, literally golden convert, and he has more faith that I do!  Well I'm running close to the hour computer time I have~ I gotta go.
